A common saying is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day; which is true! All meals are important, however, after not eating for eight to ten hours when sleeping, eating a nutrient dense breakfast is important. Balanced breakfasts can help to stabilize your blood sugar levels, prevent energy crashes, and regulate hunger hormones.
Eating breakfast can help increase the hormones that keep you satisfied and full, and suppress the ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger. On the flip side, skipping breakfast can decrease the hormones that keep us full and satisfied, and releases ghrelin, which is why you are feeling hungry and unsatisfied when skipping breakfast.
Eating a balanced, nutrient dense diet consisting of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber helps provide you with stabilized energy levels throughout the day by slowing down digestion. Oftentimes, breakfast is skipped because people are rushing and do not have time to make breakfast. Breakfast does not need to be a sit down meal, it can be eaten on the go, or prepared the night before to make your life easier while keeping you fueled.
Easy breakfast ideas to prepare the night before/ easy to go options:
Hard boiled eggs and a banana.
Fruit smoothie with fruit and yogurt/ milk.
Pre-prepared breakfast sandwiches.
Overnight oats and fruit.
Protein shake and an apple.
Toast with nut butter and banana.
These breakfast ideas all have protein, carbohydrates, and fiber to provide you with sustained energy, to get through the morning. Breakfast does not need to be complicated, in fact, the simpler the better and the more likely you are to eat breakfast. Drinking water with breakfast is important since you have gone an extended amount of time without any liquids. Dehydration can cause you to feel tired and fatigued. Upon waking up drinking a glass of water can help to combat the dehydration, and set you up for success.
